Our First Day in Cotacachi

We arrived in Cotacachi last night, 1:00 AM! We had an excellent driver from Quito to Cotacachi, lots of information about the country and COTACACHI.  We awoke this morning to the sound of barking dogs, passing truck traffic, church bells.. We are right in the middle of everything.

We went for breakfast in the court yard of this historical old hotel.. We met two Americans, one who has recently moved here, the other in the process.. So far, everything we have read or been told is even better than we envisioned.  Our breakfast of fresh breads, jam, watermelon, fresh squeezed pineapple juice, eggs cooked as desired, and bacon (really good bacon), comes with the hotel.

We are having trouble getting used to NO tipping.. In the cases when you are supposed to, it is very little, like .25 or so.  The inexpensive cost of things goes on and on, it is possible to spend no more than $1 per person for a light dinner, .25 for a bus ride, $1 for a taxi ride to anywhere in the city.  Unbelievable.

We are hearing stories from the two Americans we met this morning about the cost and availability of rental housing.. Cannot wait to check this out.. The one gentleman told us that their first rental home when they moved here was three bedroom, two bath, 1200sq ft house - $250 per month..  How about that?  The other had a two bedroom, two bath condo, fully furnished with internet, utilities included, for $325 per month.. It just seems to get better.

We are off today for more exploration..  It is a beautiful day here in Cotacachi..

Blessings to all,

Bruce & Claudia

  1. It already sounds very exciting!Glad you two made it alright. No tipping does sound weird and so does a $1 dinner!! Is that for one person or two, like it matters.....

Love you both and I'm thinking of you always! Amanda
